DESIGN-LED LANDSCAPING

Landscaping in Arnside: Garden Design Within a Protected National Landscape

Arnside sits on the Kent estuary at the northern tip of Morecambe Bay, inside the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty designated back in 1972. Landscaping in Arnside means designing for that protected coastal and limestone setting, and we manage every stage ourselves, from the first conversation to the final planting.
WHY CHOOSE GFX

What Sets GFX Apart in Arnside

Design-led, not trend-led.

Arnside’s limestone pavements, estuary views and protected coastal setting are the whole point of living here, and a garden that ignores them looks bolted on rather than part of the place. We design with the landscape designation in mind, not around it.

One team, start to finish.

A tidal estuary and a Victorian promenade built on reclaimed and constrained ground mean access and drainage need genuine local knowledge. The same team that plans that on day one sees the project through to the final planting.

Material integrity.

Salt air and exposed coastal weather off Morecambe Bay put real strain on materials that would hold up fine a few miles inland. We specify stone, timber and porcelain chosen for that exposure, not just for how they look on a dry installation day.

LOCAL EXPERTISE

Landscaping for Arnside's National Landscape Setting

Arnside grew from a scattering of farms and fishing cottages into a Victorian resort village after the Arnside Viaduct opened in 1857, carrying the railway across the Kent estuary and drawing the grand guesthouses that still line its promenade today. The village sits inside the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape, a 75 square kilometre AONB designated in 1972, and Arnside Tower, a ruined 14th-century pele tower, still stands on the outskirts as the oldest building in the parish. It’s this genuinely coastal, protected setting that shapes what landscaping in Arnside actually needs to deliver.

Already Working the Cumbria-Lancashire Border

Grange-over-Sands sits directly across the bay and Kirkby Lonsdale a short drive inland, both existing GFX projects, so the coastal exposure and protected-landscape planning rules that shape work in Arnside are already familiar to us.

Premium Materials

Coastal exposure off Morecambe Bay shapes every material choice we make here, from salt-tolerant planting to stone and timber suited to genuinely exposed, wind-driven weather.

A Victorian Resort Built Around a Viaduct

Arnside’s population grew from around 140 people in 1841 to roughly 600 by 1891 after the 1857 railway viaduct crossed the Kent estuary, bringing the grand guesthouses that still line the promenade.

Inside a National Landscape

Arnside sits within the 75 square kilometre Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape, designated an AONB in 1972 for its limestone pavements, ancient woodland and estuary views.

FAQs

Questions About Luxury Landscaping

Questions homeowners in Arnside ask us most before starting a project.
01
It can, particularly on works close to the coastline, existing woodland or a listed structure like Arnside Tower. We factor the National Landscape designation into the design from the outset so nothing gets flagged late in the process.

Does being inside a National Landscape affect what I can do with my garden?

+
02
Often, yes, especially where a project needs sign-off related to the National Landscape designation. We build that planning conversation into the schedule early, so it runs alongside the design work rather than delaying it later.

Do you work alongside architects and designers?

+
03
Coastal exposure is the main variable in Arnside: salt-tolerant planting and weather-resistant materials can add real scope compared with a sheltered inland plot. Scale and site access still matter, but we assess the exposure first before quoting.

What drives the cost of a garden design project?

+
04
Arnside already has a locally based landscaping specialist and several general contractors covering garden work here, so we’re not claiming to be the only option. What we bring is BALI accreditation plus design-first thinking suited to a National Landscape setting, carried through by the same team from first sketch to finished build.

How do you stand out from other landscapers working in Arnside?

+
05
Yes, and it’s common ground for us here. Limestone can sit close to the surface in parts of Arnside, and tidal influence affects drainage more than at an inland site, so we test both before finalising a design rather than adjusting mid-build.

Can you manage groundworks close to the estuary or on a sloped, limestone site?

+
